Use effective communication practices
There have been many successful methods of communicating with family members with compassion and love. Active listening is one such technique. This involves paying close attention to what the speaker says and then showing empathy and understanding through nonverbal and verbal cues. (Active Learning, 2018). Because active listening shows that the listener is present in the conversation and actively engaged, it can prove to be a powerful tool for building trust and fostering a feeling of connection. Use open-ended, or more detailed questions to allow for richer and deeper conversations. These questions encourage the speaker’s to provide more detail and allow them to express more of their emotions and thoughts. These practices should be tailored to the needs and context of each family member. Different communication styles and preferences may apply.
