Triple Oppression for Lesbians
Else-Quest and Hyde discussed intersectionality in their article “Intersectionality and Social Work Practice” from 2018. They discuss how it is important to understand the experiences and difficulties faced by people who are members of multiple marginalized groups. Their article, “Lesbians Who Are Women of Color May Experience Triple Obstruction” refers to the multiple forms and levels of marginalization and discrimination these people may encounter due to their identity as women, men, and lesbians. The triple oppression phenomenon can take many forms, such as discrimination based upon sexual orientation, gender, race and violence, or intersecting forms and aggressions. Social workers and other professionals can recognize and acknowledge the many forms of oppression individuals might experience and help them to better respond to their unique challenges and needs.
