The Advantages and Drawbacks of Optimism and Pessimism
According to a 2018 study published in Personality and Individual Differences, “Optimistic people tend to have better mental and physical health outcomes as well as better occupational and social functioning.” (Carver, 2018). Positive people may have greater resilience and be better equipped to deal with stress and other difficult situations. On the other side, pessimism has been linked to increased risks of developing clinical depression and other negative mental health outcomes (Carver 2018, 2018). It is important to remember that not having an optimist or pessimistic outlook on life is a permanent trait. According to a body of academic research, individuals are capable of modifying their worldviews and cognitive predispositions by employing a variety of strategies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness practices (Huppert & Baylis, 2022).
