Evolution of the School Counselor Role
A 2018 report from the National Association of School Psychologists states that there’s been an increase in youth needing mental health services. One in five kids has a mental disorder. School counselors play an essential role in meeting these needs and encouraging mental health for students. The role of school counselors may be enhanced through leadership and advocacy. According to the American School Counselor Association, school counselors may be more involved in advocating for policies and practices which support mental health and well being of students. It could be advocating for greater funding for mental services. Collaborating with community partners to support and provide resources. Working with school administrators in the implementation of evidence-based interventions and programs. Technology and social media are another avenues in which school counselors could evolve. The increasing popularity of social media and technology among young people means that school counselors are able to leverage this tool to reach their students in novel and creative ways (Nash, et al. 2020).
