The Internet of Things (IoT) is a group of devices that can be connected to the Internet, allowing them to send and receive data between each other (Berte, 2018). Gartner Inc. research predicts that the number of connected devices will grow from 8.4 billion in 2017 to more than 20 billion in 2020 as the Internet of Things (IoT) makes life easier. The myriad of different devices available expose sensitive data and the information it contains to security attacks and threats (Conti, Dehghantanha, Franke & Watson, 2018). The root of security problems in devices can be traced to a lack of standardization in the security protections provided by manufacturers and software authors.
