Review on Figure Perception Research
Research published in Journal of Vision 2018 shows that the stimulus area is not necessarily outlined with a continuous contour. Kim, 2018, suggests that other factors can define the figure, such as texture or color. The figure seems solid and real according to research in Perception in 2020. This is known as the “perceived solidity” of the figure and is influenced by factors such as the angle of the edges and the relative depth of the figure (Billinghurst & Chen, 2020). In 2022, research published in i-Perception found that the figure is perceived as being brighter than the surrounding environment (c). The phenomenon is called the “figure ground brightness effect” (LopezMoliner and co.,2022). Furthermore, all the statements above (a-b, c and e) can be true.
