Legal Questions & Ethical Decisions
I was the I/O psychologist for the case and have seen several legal problems as well as ethical issues. The potential for discrimination during the selection process to the program’s leadership development is one ethical problem. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states that it is against the law to discriminate based on race, color or religion. A structured interview process that is pre-determined to meet job requirements is recommended in order for fairness and impartiality. The possibility of conflicting interests in the selection process is another ethical problem. I am an I/O psychology and I have a professional duty to ensure fairness, objectivity, and impartiality in my workplace. A selection committee composed of people from all levels of the company would be a good idea to prevent conflicts of interest. This will ensure transparency and impartiality in the selection process. Not only are there ethical questions to consider, but so do legal ones. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, employers must provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. To ensure that this law is adhered to, I recommend that individuals with disabilities are included in the selection process. A leadership program open to everyone, not just to a few employees, is an alternative that would meet the leader’s needs. Cont…
