Supporting Indigenous Partnerships
Culture competency training: Training staff in cultural competency can aid them to understand the practices, values and beliefs of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander families and communities. It can lead to more effective and respectful communication as well as collaboration. Participation of the community in decision-making: This can foster trust, ownership, and an attitude of belonging to the partnership. Open and frequent communication can foster the exchange of ideas between staff and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons and their communities. It also ensures that all sides are heard and taken into consideration. The partnership can be responsive to community priorities by ensuring that collaborative decision-making takes place. Partnership building: Building trusting, mutually respectful relationships with Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander persons and their communities will foster mutual respect for and understanding.
