Effect of OCD in comorbid bipolar disorder on suicidality
A study in the journal Psychiatry research in 2020 found that patients suffering from bipolar disorder may be more likely to commit suicide if they have a comorbid OCD. Study included 136 bipolar disorder patients, 44 of whom had comorbid OCD. The results showed that people with OCD had higher suicidality rates, according to the Suicidal Idea Questionnaire Junior (SIQJR). Researchers suggest that comorbid OCD can worsen the symptoms of bipolar disorder, and may increase suicidal behaviour in such patients. These findings are consistent with prior research that has shown a connection between OCD, suicidality. These authors recommend that more research be done to understand how OCD can lead to suicidal behavior and develop tailored interventions to help patients suffering from comorbid OCD or bipolar disorder. The study is a reminder that patients suffering from bipolar disorder should be aware of the potential consequences of having comorbid OCD. (Al-Ameri et al., 2020)
