ADHD Medicines for Cognitive Functions
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condition, affects the ability of an individual to focus, manage impulsive behavior, regulate their activity and pay attention (American Psychiatric Association 2018). This disorder can affect perception, causing people to overlook or distort key details. ADHD individuals may experience difficulty paying attention for long periods of time and may lose their ability to focus on one task. ADHD individuals may have difficulty remembering recent instructions, or may experience short-term memory impairments. Stimulants such as amphetamines or methylphenidates can improve cognitive function in ADHD patients by increasing brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine (Nigg 2018).
