The Death and Dying Challenge
It can be very difficult to lose a parent, spouse or child. Many of these losses can have a profound and lasting impact on an individual’s emotional and mental well-being. A study in The Journal of Gerontology published 2019 found that surviving the death of a spouse was associated with an increased risk of dying and morbidity as well as decreased functional abilities and support from others (Smith and al., 2019,). A parent’s death can cause trauma, since it usually means the end of a role model and primary caregiver. For young people who have lost a parent, this can make it difficult. A miscarriage is a very devastating experience. It involves losing a child, and all the hopes and dreams that go with it. The loss of a child can cause feelings of shame, guilt and grief (Nieuwenhuijze (2018).
