Communication is important in all settings, especially electronic ones. The use of nonverbal cues to communicate additional information, clarification, or understanding can help in ways that words simply cannot. Hyunjin Song, Norah Dunbar and others found that successful communication in virtual settings requires nonverbal cues. These include visual expressions, facial expressions and voice tone. For meaningful relationships with other people, it is essential to communicate your feelings in an electronic environment. Intentional punctuation and emojis are two ways I express emotions in text messages or emails. When I want to convey happiness, I will use an emoji with a smiley face and an exclamation point when I’m excited. When I need to communicate something casual, I adjust my tone and use informal language. My nonverbal cues become clearer over time.
