Leadership is key
This case study demonstrates two leadership styles: Brett the Acting/NUM who is powerful and efficient and has an overwhelming style. Mark uses an autocratic style, telling his team what to do and expecting them to deliver results. He doesn’t care much for others opinions. Brett prefers a laissez-faire style, in which he feels overwhelmed and is not able to control the situation. Burns (2018) explains that the traditional leadership approach is heavily based upon power, and is characterised by hierarchical structures. In contrast, contemporary leadership theories (Avolio & Yammarino, 2017) focus on using emotional intelligence and empowering team members to achieve outcomes. This case study shows Mark’s style is traditional and power-based, while Brett uses a more modern approach. De Vries, 2016, emphasized the importance of using power to inspire and empower your team (De Vries). It can be misused to create fear, mistrust and intimidation.
