Effective child discipline components
American Academy of Pediatrics (2018, 2018) states that child discipline is about setting clear, consistent rules, using positive reinforcement, punishment and teaching appropriate problem-solving skills. Instead of relying solely on punishment, it is crucial to teach and guide children. Studies have shown that children who are subject to physical punishment such as spanking can be more aggressive and less intellectually developed than those who receive it (Gershoff, 2022). Positive reinforcement is more likely to promote long-term behavior changes for children, as positive reinforcement (Kazdin 2019, 2019) A parent’s role is to set the example for children by modeling appropriate behaviour and being consistent in disciplining them. Inconsistent discipline can be confusing for children and may lead to more disobedience (Dinkmeyer & McKay, 2018).
