It is crucial that counselors are not judgmental when dealing with clients who believe differently from their counselor (Committee – 2020). A counselor may take the following actions in such situations: Recognize and validate client’s emotions and experience. It is crucial to respect and acknowledge the client’s rights to have their beliefs and opinions, regardless of whether they are different from those held by the counselor. You could use phrases such as “I get why you feel this way” or “This is something that’s very personal to you.” The counselor must focus on the client’s needs and goals. Rather than trying convince the client to change his beliefs, the counselor should help him or her achieve those goals. It might be necessary to work with the client in order for them to come up with coping methods or other solutions that reflect their values. You might benefit from supervision and consultation if the counselor has difficulty staying non-judgmental. Counselors can gain perspective, and be able to maintain a therapeutic approach.
