Aboriginal Health Systems: Loss in Land Culture, Impact on Aboriginal Health Systems
Land and culture loss has had significant impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the community and healthcare systems. A 2018 report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that Indigenous Australians are more likely to be in poor health and to have lower rates of disability and death than non-Indigenous Australians. The loss of culture and land has led to economic and social disadvantage and disrupted traditional living patterns. Many Indigenous Australians are mistrustful of mainstream institutions and services, such as the health system, due to their loss in land and culture (AIHW 2018). The mistrust may lead to lower engagement rates with health services, community services, or health systems. This could also contribute to lower Indigenous Australians’ utilization of these services (AIHW 2018). It is crucial to address these problems by prioritizing Indigenous Australian empowerment and the reconstruction of cultural relationships.
