Names of Two Lipids – Phosphatidylcholine, and Sphingomyelin
Human biology is dominated by lipids. These are vital components of cells and membranes, which are involved in many crucial functions. The two most common lipids in cells are phosphatidylcholine, (PC), and sphingomyelin, (SM). PC is a type of phospholipid made up of a glycol backbone and two fatty acid chain with a head group. SM, a sphingolipid is made from a ceramide-backbone and one fatty acid chain. It also has a phosphocholinehead group. These two lipids play an important role in the structure and functioning of cell membranes. Additionally, they regulate the movement and motion of molecules within the membrane. Both SM as well as PC are important in controlling cell signaling and transport of material across cells. PC plays an important role in cholesterol metabolism regulation and the formation lipoproteins. SM helps regulate cell adhesion, and create tight junctions between cells. These two lipids are crucial components of the cell membrane, and they are necessary for its function and integrity (GonzalezCastillo, 2016; Ouhadi, 2021).
