Understanding Human Behavior
Two interconnected fields, social psychology and personality, study the human behavior of people and factors that affect it. These fields are interrelated and can be used to help assess the behavior of individuals, groups, and societies in many ways. Social psychology, for example, can give insight into people’s thinking, emotions, and behavior. These insights can allow us to better understand the reasons people behave in certain social environments and help us influence our behavior using social norms and persuasion (Fiske et. al., 2018). Personality psychology, however, is focused on individuals’ differences in behavior and the relationship they have to their underlying personality characteristics. Understanding personality can help us better predict and understand an individual’s behavior in different situations, as well as how they may respond to different stimuli or challenges (Costa & McCrae, 2018). The combination of personality and social psychology can give us valuable insights into the human behavior and help us understand how to assess individuals and groups.
