Register-level architecture refers to the internal registers used temporarily by the system for storing data and instructions while it processes commands. Registers store little data or instructions and are fast. Registers allow for an instruction to be broken down into multiple steps. This allows the system to work more efficiently and saves time (Gabriel 2015). Registers not only speed up calculations, but also allow the processor more precise instructions to be completed. Registers also provide instructions for the processor to execute operations, such as. Registers allow the processor to perform operations (i.e., logical and arithmetic) on register data. They also permit the processor access to memory through indirect data transfer from memory to registers and vice versa (Rizvi 2021). In summary, registers are essential to the register-level architecture, serving as the processor’s internal memory as data and instructions are passed to and from memory during system processing.
