Production and Regulation of ATP Molecules by Beta Oxidation
Beta oxidation, which is a metabolic process that produces fatty acid catabolism, is an important source and energy for humans and other animals. The oxidation process of a comparable amount of glucose produces more ATP, and one round of beta oxidation can produce up to 13 ATP molecules. (Beltran et. al., 2016). Ghotbi, et. al.,2021, explains this because fatty acids have a greater oxidation rate than glucose. Beta oxidation is only initiated by the body when there are high cellular energy requirements, like during fasting and exercise. It’s also an expensive process that can be costly (Beltran, et al. 2016). Ghotbi, et. al.,2021) Also, the by-product of the breakdown of fat acids is acetyl-5-CoA. It’s used in Krebs cycles to produce energy and ATP molecules. Last but not least, the body has a higher capacity to store energy in fats than it does in glucose. Fatty acids therefore provide a richer source of energy (Beltran, et al. 2016).
