Companies use a trademark to safeguard their brands and stop others using them without permission. A trademark is a type of intellectual property protection which grants the company the exclusive right to use its brand in commerce. The company is the only one allowed to use the logo or brand it owns. This can protect the company from competitors using similar logos or trademarks to market their products. The company must register the trademark at the United States Patent and Trademark Office 2020 in order to obtain a trademark. While the process of registering a trademark takes time and is costly, once it has been granted, the trademark will last as long the company uses the mark in commerce.
