Barefoot College Social Movement
In 1972, Bunker Roy founded the Barefoot College at Tilonia in Rajasthan. In this social movement, education and skill training are available to underprivileged rural communities, particularly in developing countries. Barefoot College provides basic skills training and income generation to help these groups become self-sufficient and sustainable. The Barefoot College encourages students to tackle real-world problems within their community through experiential learning and practical training. To empower people and improve their lives, the college promotes participation in decision-making as well as community involvement. Barefoot College is a leader in community and empowerment education. “The Power of Ideas: Barefoot College and Transformative Education Potential” (2021).Its education strategy and innovative approach to development has inspired many similar efforts around the world. Education can empower people to defend their rights and participate in democracy. It can also fuel social movements. The social movements that are able to change policies and educational institutions can be a catalyst for positive changes. They challenge old models and promote inclusive and egalitarian models of education. This demonstrated the transformative power of education and democracy’s contribution to social change.
