Since the early 1900s, proponents of eugenics have argued that human improvement is necessary to eliminate certain undesirable traits. Some attributes classified as undesirable include: crime, dementia, alcoholism, and bipolar disorder. Families with a history of bad traits are considered “unfit” and not worth breeding to produce better offspring. As a result, society chooses to sterilize entire families and institutionalizes certain individuals to prevent them from having children. An example of this eugenic activity is the Holocaust in Germany, which attempted to wipe out all of the world’s Jewish population. Racial hygiene is widely practiced in Germany to eliminate unwanted minorities. People with mental disorders have been institutionalized and withdrawn from society to prevent reproduction.
