Remember and distinguish between Levels of Protein Structure
The amino acids that make up proteins are complex molecules. Proteins play a vital role in normal body functioning. Understanding the structures of the molecules is crucial. It’s important to know the levels of protein structure. They are the primary and secondary levels, as well as the tertiary, tertiary and quaternary protein structures. Primary level is the sequence of amino acid that forms the protein. This sequence, which is known as the DNA code and responsible for unique folding properties of proteins, is determined. A secondary level in protein structure involves the folding the protein chain into an exact three-dimensional shape. These interactions can be achieved by hydrogen bonding, disulfide-bridges and other noncovalent interactions. (Gan et al., 2016). Tertiary protein structure refers to the total three-dimensional protein shape. The interactions among the side chains and amino acids create complex networks of interactions that determine this structure. The arrangement of more than two polypeptide chains within a protein complex is called the quaternary protein structure.
