Social Contract Theory Critique
The weakness of social contract theory, however is the exclusion of certain groups from the social contract. Moehler (2020). Women and members of minorities racial have been historically excluded from many social contracts. Because these groups do not have the same protections and rights as the dominant, it is problematic. It can result in discrimination or inequality and undermine the legitimacy of the social agreement. Prima facie Deontology solves the issue of absolute rules, by acknowledging that moral obligations may conflict in some situations. Primarily deontology might allow the possibility for prima facie that the duty of saving a life may override the duty to truth. This allows flexibility to be used in place of rigid moral guidelines. The strength of the social contract theory approach is its ability to give us reasons to be ethical. Social contract theory states that people make an agreement to share some of their individual freedoms for the security and protection of the state. Living in an orderly and more fair society is possible by adhering the the terms of the Social Contract. It provides an incentive for individuals to live morally as they are in their self-interest.
