Myth or Fiction?
The truth is that myths are tales passed down from generations to express collective feelings and ideas. Myths often have symbolic meaning, which gives insight into the past and values of cultures that are long gone. Gill, 2017. Myths also can be used as explanations of the world and help to understand things that we don’t know. For example, the Ancient Greek myth of Pandora’s box is used to explain why there is evil and suffering in the world (Harris, 2015). It is possible to use myths as a guide and teach moral lessons. For example, the Norse myths about Loki and Thor. This myth teaches us that it is important to stand up for the right thing, regardless of the odds (Gill 2017, 2017).
