Dementia is a term used to refer to a group of symptoms that affect a person’s thinking, problem solving, memory, speech/language and social skills. It is not a specific disease, but it can be caused by many diseases (Khanacademymedicine, 2015). Dementia can affect people’s daily lives as they may experience personality changes and be unable to express themselves and control their emotions. Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, begins with mild memory loss but progresses to complete loss of memory and environmental awareness with age (CDC, 2020). No single factor causes Alzheimer’s. It is the result of a combination of risk factors, such as changes in brain cells with age, family history of disease, and lifestyle behavior.
